Tinctures

A tincture is an extract made with alcohol. Herbal tinctures are made by soaking plant material in alcohol until all the constituents are extracted. Tinctures are made with alcohol because it is one of the most efficient solvents and extracts virtually all of the chemical constituents from the plant material. It then acts as a medium through which the plant's active constituents are ingested into the body. Because the alcohol is also a preservative, your herbal tinctures will last in potency for many years.

Tincture dosages can be put into warm water, or tea, and the alcohol will completely evaporate within minutes, leaving only the extracted plant constituents. The amount of alcohol in a 20 drop tincture dose is negligible, it is said about the same as in a ripe banana.
